Dear supporters of the Wesley residents,
Thank you for taking the time to sign up for our newsletter.
What’s at stake here is our lives and we need you and your voice.
We are in the fight of our lives.
90% of us are 65 and older. We are on fixed incomes, many receive assistance from other governmental agencies. If we are forced to leave our homes, we will receive assistance from the City Of Evanston for one maybe two years. After that we will become homeless because we cannot afford market rate rental units.
This is not the first time that there’s been an attempt to tear down or condemn these apartments. The demographics of the 5th ward and the entire city of Evanston has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. Developers have been after this land to complete the gentrification process in this area for many years.
There are no current protections in place to protect our low income, elderly Black neighbors in Evanston. Contrary to the messaging that’s been communicated from our elected and city officials we are not disposable!
The pain felt by low income residents and our communities is all too familiar. Each time these incidents happen, many are left wondering what we can do to support our disenfranchised friends in real, meaningful ways.
This is how you can help:
- LEARN MORE – read about what is going on the Justice For Evanston Tenants website.
- SPREAD THE WORD – by getting 5 of your friends and neighbors to sign up to our mailing list.
- STAY TUNED – another newsletter will be coming to your inbox with more opportunities for action!
- Instagram is coming soon, please follow and share our posts from there.
- Gofundme coming soon.
Choose a path of progress.
No work in helping others is too small.
Change can only happen with your help.
